New Traditions…Bring on Family Day!

ImageSo we’ve got a new holiday in BC. They call it Family Day. We got it because Alberta (and some other provinces) were showing off their day off and we needed to match them. Hang on, I’ve got to get off my political soapbox…Give me a sec. Ok, there.

So YEAH! Family Day! We needed a holiday in February, right? Or DID we? It’s a nice gesture, for those who get the stat. For those who don’t get a day off, it’ll be added to their Disgruntled Piggybank. While I’m all for gestures, I have a question. Why not just have Family Day…in July? Let’s face it, we share Canada Day with June and she’s pretty bossy about what goes down there. What about another long weekend carefully placed on the calendar during a beautiful time of the year when the skies are blue, the weather is warm and we’re not all that productive at work anyway? How about mid-July when we need another holiday day for a summer road trip, or just need to lay around on the deck with family that are in town visiting. Now that would be a Family Day, huh?

Alright, I know, I know…there are economic benefits to a holiday in Feburary. And other good reasons that I am not privy to. So I’ll just accept it and move on, as I do not want to risk being ungrateful. I’ll take what I can get.

Let’s do a run-down on what we get with a long weekend early in February in Canada:

  • A day off (maybe)
  • A cold winter’s day
  • Free skating at the community recreation centre
  • Deep but unfulfilled expectations
  • A clean slate

So we’ve got a holiday that has no traditions, no fancy dinner to cook, no money for a weekend getaway since we’re working on that Xmas Visa bill, right?

So let’s just blue sky this thing. What could you dream up for your FREE day/Long Weekend? I happen to have a few ideas:

  • ImagePJ’s are the dress code (until brunch after 11am)
  • Brunch at our favourite breakfast spot
  • A walk somewhere beautiful (with a scarf)
  • A closet or two cleaned out — who has time for that on a normal day off with soccer games and groceries?
  • A silly, board game episode or two with the family
  • A half-hour to call some friends/family that you never have time to call
  • Go to the theatre to watch a movie with Twizzlers and popcorn (now I’m getting decadent)
  • Tell everyone Happy Family Day!..Because you can.

The best part about this untraditional holiday in February…I suppose just might be…the fact that there are no traditions and you get to make your own. And that’s probably the best kind of holiday there is.

Happy Family Day!
